Holiday Head Coverings

Collage-Holiday-table-head-coverings

The holiday season is upon us and that means you may want to enhance your look for parties and gatherings.  If you are experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions wearing wraps and scarves can make you feel festive and lovely.

Color matters

Brighten your spirits by looking for scarves and head wraps in vivid colors that compliment your outfits and your skin tone.  More radiant colors can also lighten your face, accent your eyes and make you look your best.

When you do wear more basic colors you can brighten up black, white, or grey headpieces with a colorful headband layered on top. Small scarves add a decorative touch to a solid hat or turban. This is an easy way to add a pop of color, texture or pattern to your look.

Accessories

Hat pins and broaches allow you to enhance your pre-tied scarf, turban or hat with a bit of sparkle and fun. Adding rosettes or rhinestones are easy ways to embellish your head coverings. Because these accessories are removable you can use them on different headwear. Mix and match to create a style that is all your own.

Fabric choices

Choose comfortable fabrics that are breathable, soft and natural while maintaining color and stretch.  Fabrics that are easy to launder make maintaining your look easy

Cotton – Cotton is appropriate for every season. It is a natural fiber that is durable, comfortable and does not slip. Look for lightweight cotton scarves that drape well.

Silk – Silk is a lovely fabric that is soft and breathable. It drapes beautifully. Because it is a natural fiber it absorbs perspiration. It is a delicate fabric that needs to be handled with care when washing.

Viscose – Viscose is also known as Rayon. It is a versatile fabric is comfortable, soft and highly absorbent. You will find viscose holds color, has no static build up and does not trap body heat.

Chiffon – Chiffon is an easy wash and wear fabric. It drapes well and does not slip. Unfortunately, it is very lightweight and might not be the best choice for colder weather. You will want to wear a hat liner with scarves made from chiffon because it is not as soft as other options.

Wool – Lightweight wool scarves make lovely head coverings for cool weather. It is a natural fabric that resists moisture. Cashmere can be soft and comfortable. Select scarves that are not too thick to avoid a bulky look.

If the fabric you choose is uncomfortable you can use a lace sleep cap or hat liner under your head covering.  Hat liners also absorb sweat and allow you to wash only the liner. This keeps your head covering clean longer.

Summer to Fall Wig Transitioning Tips

Summer to Fall Wig Transitioning Tips

fall-wig-accessory

It’s that time again, ladies. Summer is winding down, and Fall is right around the pumpkin-spiced corner. Have you started thinking about how your hair will make the summer-to-fall transition? The days of shorts and tanks have been shoved aside in favor of jeans, jackets, and boots. It’s the perfect opportunity to switch up your wardrobe and make your hair your best accessory.

Wigs are a great way to help ease your hair into the new weather because you can try out different styles that you may not have been comfortable wearing in the summer. It’s not quite cold yet, but the heat is not gone, making it tricky to transition into a new style.

Here are some tips on how to successfully fall into looking your best this season:

Fall Colors

Being able to change up your look on a dime, with no long-term commitment, is a distinct benefit to wearing a wig. When considering a new color, also consider your skin tone and stay close (if you’re looking for a natural look). Darker tends to be easier to pull off in the fall and winter.

Trending color considerations:

Warmer Tones – darker tones such as chocolate brown, toffee, and auburn are deep, rich, and perfect for the season.

Pops of Color — soft peach, coppers, and oranges bring warmth and dimension, providing an easy style transition from the more vibrant summer.

Change Up The Length

As it gets colder and you start considering how to update your wig for the season, certain factors must be considered before committing to a length. If you’re changing the style, especially around your face, consider the shape of your face to help you pick a complementary style.

The weather in your area is key to decision-making. If your area is damp, no frizz is a major benefit to wigs, but at the same time, it might be best to go with a shorter, just as versatile look. Long-flowing locks are wonderful, but it comes with more daily maintenance.

To update a human hair wig, simply go to a hairstylist who will be able to cut, color, and style a wig just like natural hair. If you choose a synthetic wig, the flexibility of having a rotation of style possibilities throughout the season makes it a great option.

What’s In Style

  • Center Part – A simple and sophisticated look is perfect for any occasion and hair length.
  • Long Bob – Cut to the chin, this hairstyle is blunt, no-fuss, and works for any hair texture.
  • Smooth and Straight – One of the most prominent trends this year. Just tuck the hair behind your ears to show off the face and collar bones.
  • Sleek Ponytails – Low maintenance and smooth, great for those rainy hat days, where pulling it back is the clean go-to look.
  • Headbands – Scarves, bandanas, and headbands will add style and warmth to your fall ensemble. Use the accessory to put your hair up or let your locks flow loose.

Wigful Thinking Jon Renau Trunk Show Recap

Wigful Thinking Jon Renau Trunk Show Recap

Jon Renau Trunk Show

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend our style show and educational Trunk Show event on May 19th featuring wigs, toppers, and hair pieces from the acclaimed wig stylist business, Jon Renau.

In 1969, John and Stella Reynolds began their wig and hairpiece manufacturing company because they wanted to give women the opportunity to express themselves through their own unique style. Their company, Jon Renau, grew because their business was fueled by their care, concern, and attention to each individual customer’s needs. In 1984, the Jon Renau company moved to the United States from South Africa. They remain a family business even today and are now a leading wig manufacturer. They partner with boutiques and retailers to provide their high-quality hair additions and wigs which come in over 100 colors and over 125 different styles.

One mistake our Wigful Thinking customers make before they come to our shop is purchasing a wig online and ending up with a wig that does not match their skin tone or their style.

That’s part of why Wigful Thinking was excited to host the Jon Renau Trunk Show. No wig shopping experience can result in a better match then when you take the time in person to find the wig that is right for you. Our trunk show guests were able to carefully examine and try on a variety of Jon Renau styles to find just the right wig.

Another wig shopping mistake that we hear our customers make before they come to Wigful Thinking is not taking the time to become familiar with wig terminology before they make a purchase.

This is understandable since there is so much information to learn about wigs and how they are made. What is monofilament? What are lace front wigs? The Jon Renau Trunk Show gave our customers an opportunity to learn different wig terms.

Wig shopping can also be a lonely experience.

The Trunk Show gave our customers an opportunity to meet one another, support one another, and to know that they are not alone in whatever they are going through in their life right now.

Although our Trunk Show has come and gone, Wigful Thinking gives our everyday customers the same care and attention that we gave to our Trunk Show guests. Schedule your personal consultation to find the wig just right for you.

Why Should I Buy a Human Hair Wig?

Why Should I Buy a Human Hair Wig?

You’re in a season where you need a wig, but you’re not sure if you should you invest in a more expensive human hair wig, or purchase a less expensive synthetic wig?

Knowing some of the details of a human hair wig should help make your decision a little easier.

Many people use human hair wigs because they feel and look more natural than synthetic wigs. Human hair wigs and hair-pieces are created from hair harvested from a human. They can be treated just as you would natural hair by styling, perming and even coloring them. It is important to remember that if you plan to alter your human hair wig, that you should take it to a stylist who has experience in dealing with this type of wig.

human hair wigThe use of care products specifically formulated for human hair wigs is a must.

It’s also important to remember that human hair wigs do not have naturally occurring oils from the scalp so you must hydrate and condition the wig daily. Wigful Thinking carries everything you need to keep your human hair wig in perfect condition.

Human hair wigs can come in a number of textures, so it’s important to match up the texture of your hair if you’ll be using the wig while your hair is growing back after an illness. Human hair wigs need to be washed, conditioned and re-styled frequently, just like natural hair. The weather can affect your human hair wig, just like your own hair would become frizzy or dry during different seasons. Human hair wigs are also more fragile and susceptible to damage due to over-styling or service from an unqualified professional.

Having been harvested from human hair, these wigs are typically more expensive. Depending on your personal preference, having hair that looks and feels natural could be worth the extra financial investment. Having a wig that needs daily maintenance or styling can bring a sense of normalcy as well. Your human hair wig will last a year or longer with proper care and maintenance.

Encouragement and Hope for Those with Trichotillomania

trichotillomania

Stressed. Hopeless. Lonely. Helpless. Ashamed.

Those who struggle with trichotillomania feel all of these things. But they need to know that they are not alone! Between 2.5 and 3.5 million people experience this each year. Even many celebrities have shared their stories, such as Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Olivia Munn, and Megan Fox.

Trichotillomania is a disorder characterized by someone pulling out their hair.

According to Dr. Fred Penzel in his book The Hair-Pulling Problem: The Complete Guide to Trichotillomania, the hair-pulling episodes are sometimes done purposefully, and at other times the puller is unaware that they are doing it. Sometimes this disorder is coupled with obsessive-compulsive disorder, but not always. And the hair that one pulls out is not always on the head but could be anywhere on the body, including eyelashes or eyebrows.

But there is hope…

First of all, there are psychologists and support groups that can help people identify the cause of their hair-pulling episodes. Once the cause is determined, the behavior can be replaced with a different, harmless, stress-relieving behavior. But it may be tough for a person with trichotillomania to get out into a social situation to share their struggle because of incomplete hair loss.

Change is a lot of dedicated work for those struggling with this issue. Looking good on the outside can give strength and encouragement to regain control of their life. A wig can bolster the courage of a person with trichotillomania while they are waiting for their own hair to regrow.

4 Handy Terms to Know When Shopping for a Wig

4 Handy Terms to Know When Shopping for a Wig

Wigful Thinking LogoSometimes when facing a new experience, knowing some terms ahead of time can help you feel at ease.

Especially when you feel overwhelmed with your sudden change in appearance.

Caryl understands. Caryl is the owner of Wigful Thinking. As a two-time cancer survivor, she understands what it is like to be faced with the personal task of finding a wig for yourself.

Knowing some key terms ahead of time can help you feel more familiar with what you will see when you come to Wigful Thinking. Of course, we are happy to explain these terms in person during your consultation, but if it would help you to feel more comfortable, here are four terms you will encounter when shopping for a wig or hair piece.

Synthetic Cap Construction

Synthetic cap construction refers to how the cap, or the part of the wig that fits snugly onto your head, is made. The next three terms are types of cap designs or construction.

wig stylesHand-Tied

What is hand-tied? 100% hand-tied means that each strand of hair is tied onto the wig’s entire cap. This gives it a smooth surface and makes it comfortable for those with total hair loss where the base of the wig will be against your sensitive scalp. Since each strand is affixed individually, this reduces shedding, which protects your wig and keeps it looking great for the long term. And since each strand is individually tied, each strand can move independently, giving your hair natural movement and a realistic look.

Monofilament

Monofilament wigs give the look of naturally growing hair coming from your own scalp since the fabric of the cap is sheer. This allows your own skin to show through no matter which way the hair is parted. If you like to change up your part, a monofilament type is for you.

Lace front

A lace front wig is the only type of wig where you can expose your own hairline. There is “lace” or a sheer mesh on the front of the wig, which will adhere to your forehead with adhesive tape or glue. When the part of the lace not under the wig is cut away, you are left with natural-looking and feeling hair.  Many celebrities have worn this type of wig for years. This type is great if you want to wear the hair away from your face in a ponytail. This construction also means that you don’t need heavy bangs or hair volume in the front since you don’t need to hide the front hairline.

When you come for your consultation, Caryl will be very happy to show you exactly what these terms mean and what a difference these types of wigs can make to you.

Since Caryl has been in your shoes, she understands that the right wig can help you feel confident and radiant to meet life’s challenges with your chin up and a bold smile on your face.
